NewsNigeriaFlood Sacks Families in Anambra Estate, Residents Call for Help

Monday’s torrential rainfall in Awka, Anambra State, has displaced over a dozen families from their homes in Ngozika Estate.
The flood, caused by heavy downpour overnight, affected many families in Ngozika Estate, the capital city of Anambra State.
Although Anambra was initially identified as one of the states at risk of flooding this year, specific local governments have been flagged as particularly prone to flooding.
Residents in those areas have been warned to seek safer locations, and IDP camps have been established for those in need.
Ngozika Estate is considered a highbrow residential area in Awka, far from the local governments typically associated with flooding.
However, on Monday, wailing filled the estate as floodwaters inundated many properties.
Most families displaced by the flood are currently staying with friends and relatives in safer areas, while some of the wealthier residents have relocated to hotels, as the estate is home to many of Anambra’s privileged individuals.
A resident told West African Pilot News: “We have moved out of our home into a hotel. Everything we own has been submerged by floodwaters, and we are currently homeless. We are calling on the Anambra State government to come to our aid because we are suffering.
“This morning (Tuesday), I visited our house to inspect the damage after neighbors helped evacuate me and my children last night. You won’t believe what I saw—our entire property has been damaged by water, and much of it is missing.
“I don’t know where to start. We are not the only ones affected; in the hotel where my children and I are staying, there are about five other families.”
“As I speak, it looks like it’s going to rain again, and I am very afraid for my family. We are calling on Governor Soludo to help us.”
However, our reporter learned from other affected residents that the flooding is exacerbated by an undeveloped plot in the area with blocked drainage.
“The owner of the plot is reportedly a widow living in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. She was previously mandated by the Anambra State government to develop the land to alleviate flooding in the area. After a year of inaction, the government threatened to revoke the land, but she appealed to a bishop in Onitsha, who intervened with Governor Soludo, and she was allowed to keep the land.
“Now, that plot poses a threat to residents, and we are urging Governor Soludo to take action to protect his constituents.”
At the time of this report, residents had contacted the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) but had received no assistance.
