In line with the Enugu State Government’s zero tolerance to moribund assets in the state, the Enugu State House of Assembly has moved a motion urging the state government to revitalize the Veterinary School-Farm School, Achi in Oji River Local Government Area.
The motion on notice (HM/05/2024) sponsored by Osita Eze, Chairman Committee on Education, Science, and Innovation, member representing Oji River constituency and twelve other member states; “This historic institution, one of the oldest veterinary schools in the former South Eastern Nigeria, has been a cornerstone of agricultural and veterinary development not only in Enugu State but across the nation.”
“Unfortunately, this institution, which was once a beacon of progress in veterinary science and education, has faced numerous challenges over the years that have severely impacted its functionality.”

In the prayers, the member representing Oji River Constituency urged that a perimeter fence be erected around the school to prevent further encroachment to secure the institution.
Other issues raised in the motion include the need for urgent rehabilitation of the school which will impede employment, loss of revenue, and unhealthy livestock management.
“The deterioration of the school has caused a significant loss of employment opportunities, both within the institution and in the broader community.
“The loss of trained professionals has also resulted in a decline in the state’s veterinary services, affecting livestock management and overall agricultural productivity,” the lawmaker noted.
Lauding the motion which he described as timely and important, Mr. Iloabuchi Aniagu, a member representing Nkanu East Constituency called the attention of the lawmakers to the need to capture the School’s rehabilitation in the state budget.
He also called on the Ministry of Education and Agriculture to capture the revitalization in the next budget.
However, the prayer to affiliate the school to the Enugu State Polytechnic, Iwollo was expunged from the motion.
In his explanation, the Speaker of the House, Uche Ugwu, said the Enugu State Polytechnic, Iwollo has a law backing it and as such any move to affiliate the Veterinary school to it cannot be made through motion but by a law; the request should be presented to the house through a bill for a law.
