The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED), a non-Governmental organization has launched a new project, “Promotion of Democratic Participation in Nigeria: Social Accountability in the Implementation of Free Maternal and Child Healthcare Law in Kano State.

The creativity aims to reduce the rates of maternal and child mortality in the region.

Executive Director Dr. Ibrahim M. Zikirullahi of the organization during the inaugural press briefing held at City Centre Hotels in Kano State, emphasized the importance of community engagement and collaboration in achieving the project’s goals.

“We urge all key stakeholders to join forces with us in advocating for the thorough and effective implementation of the Kano State Free Maternal and Child Healthcare Law,” he said.

According to him, Nigeria has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world, with 576 deaths per 100,000 live births.

“The country also accounts for 10% of global deaths related to pregnancy and childbirth.

“In Kano State, the situation is critical, with limited access to healthcare services and a lack of accountability.

“The three-year project aims to Facilitate the effective implementation of the Kano State Free Maternal Newborn and Child Healthcare (FMNCH) Law, 2023, Foster a culture of social accountability and transparency in the allocation of budgets for maternal and child healthcare, Educate the public on their rights to maternal and child healthcare and Mobilize community members to advocate for the effective delivery of healthcare services, “Dr Zikrullah said.

The organization also acknowledged the contributions of other stakeholders in the maternal and child healthcare sector in Kano State and expressed gratitude to MISEREOR-KZE, Germany, for their unwavering commitment to the welfare of women and children in Nigeria.
