President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued new directives to reduce the number of security personnel and official vehicles attached to Ministers, Ministers of State, and Heads of Federal Government agencies as part of his administration’s cost-cutting measures.
In a statement released on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu instructed that the security detail for public officials be limited to five personnel, comprising four police officers and one Department of State Services (DSS) officer.
The President emphasised that “no additional security personnel will be assigned.”
Tinubu also directed a reduction in the number of official vehicles, restricting convoys to a maximum of three.
He instructed the National Security Adviser to engage with the Military, Paramilitary, and Security Agencies to implement appropriate reductions in vehicle and personnel deployments.
The directive, which takes immediate effect, underscores the urgency of the President’s efforts to reduce government spending.
It is noteworthy that earlier in January, Tinubu cut the size of his entourage on foreign trips from 50 to 20 officials and reduced his local travel team to 25.
Similarly, the Vice President’s entourage was scaled down to five officials for international trips and 15 for domestic ones.
These cost-saving measures follow the President’s recent reshuffle of his cabinet, with the appointment of seven new ministers, the redeployment of ten others, and the merging of two ministries.
