The Joint Action Committee, JAC, of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, will commence an indefinite strike from midnight on Sunday, 27th October 2024.
A circular signed by NASU’s General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU’s President, Mohammed Ibrahim, directed all members across federal and state universities, as well as inter-university centres, to fully comply with the directive.
The unions are demanding payment of four months’ withheld salaries, improved remuneration, earned allowances, and implementation of the 2009 agreement with the government.
The unions disclosed that multiple warnings had been issued to the Federal Government, yet no meaningful response was received.
“It is quite appalling that we have issued several ultimatums with no positive result from the Government,” the statement reads.
JAC expressed disappointment over the delay in payment despite President Bola Tinubu’s approval of 50 per cent of the withheld salaries, blaming the Ministry of Finance for the impasse.
“The sincerity of government to our cause is in doubt,” the unions stated.
Branch chairmen were directed to hold joint congresses on Monday, 28th October 2024, to ensure the strike’s full implementation.
State-owned universities were also encouraged to incorporate local demands into the strike.
JAC warned that no concession would be granted and emphasised that compliance with the strike was mandatory.
The unions affirmed their determination to continue the industrial action until their demands are met.
“We affirm our determination to persist in this struggle until ultimate victory is secured,” the statement concluded.
The strike, originally slated for 23rd October, was rescheduled for better coordination after NASU’s Trade Group Council meeting at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
