A leading aspirant in the All Progressives Grand Alliance – APGA, for the upcoming Anambra South senatorial by-election, Chief Akai Egwuonwu, has said that he would prioritize mechanized agriculture when elected to the Senate. Speaking during a visit to his office by some key stakeholders in the agricultural sector in Anambra State, Chief Egwuonwu who led the rice revolution in Anambra State said that mechanized agriculture is the “key to food sufficiency in Anambra South”.
Pointing to the agricultural potentials in Orumba North and Orumba South local governments in the Anambra South senatorial zone, Mr. Egwuonwu said that there is sufficient fertile land and suitable weather for all kinds of mechanized agriculture capable of feeding the entire state. This, Egwuonwu said he has the agency and know-how to unlock when he fully taps into the vast available human resources in the zone. Chief Akai also said that he would partner with both the state and federal governments to ensure that attention is focused on both small- and large-scale farming on an industrial scale.
Chief Akai Egwuonwu is one of the leading agro entrepreneurs in the Southeast, with two national rice brands – Stine Rice and Anambra Rice, among other produce to his name. His involvement in the agricultural sector caught across various chains of the agricultural sector. For instance, from rice farming to milling and packaging. All these Egwuonwu said he would bring to bear and revitalize the processes in a way that would make farming attractive to young people, thereby helping the zone attain food sufficiency.
