…Refuses Further Public Debate on Akpoti-Uduaghan Claims

The Senate has passed a vote of confidence in Senate President Godswill Akpabio, dismissing allegations of sexual harassment levelled against him by suspended Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, declared during Thursday’s plenary, “We don’t only stand united around our mandate but also communicate this clearly to members of the Nigerian public by moving a vote of confidence in Senator Godswill Akpabio, the leadership of this Senate.”

This decision follows Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan’s report of the alleged harassment to the United Nations Inter-Parliamentary Union in New York.

Mr Bamidele emphasised the Senate’s decision to refrain from further public discourse on the matter.

“If we do not debate this matter anymore, appear on media houses or choose to be silent on this matter and let the court do their job or things take their natural course, know that it’s a deliberate, intentional decision on our part, and we are doing this in order not to get distracted,” he said.

He acknowledged civil society perspectives, urging objectivity in their analysis.

Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan had previously condemned her suspension as gender-based violence and accused the Senate of a “gang-up” against her.
