Nigeria’s aspirations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup took a significant hit on Tuesday as the Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw by Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
The Nigerian team, led by coach Eric Chelle, dominated possession but struggled to penetrate Zimbabwe’s defense.
The deadlock was broken in the 74th minute when Victor Osimhen headed in a cross from Ola Aina, giving Nigeria a 1-0 lead.
However, the advantage was short-lived as Zimbabwe’s Tawanda Chirewa netted an equaliser in stoppage time, capitalising on a defensive lapse to silence the home crowd.
This result leaves Nigeria in a precarious position, sitting fourth in Group C with seven points, trailing group leaders South Africa, who have 13 points following their 2-0 victory over Benin Republic.
With only a few matches remaining, the Super Eagles face an uphill battle to secure qualification for the World Cup.
