BusinessNewsNigeriaChampion Breweries Acquires Bullet Brand from Distell Nigeria

Champion Breweries Plc, a subsidiary of enJOYcorp and a stalwart of Nigeria’s brewing landscape since 1974, has struck a pivotal agreement to acquire the renowned Bullet ready-to-drink (RTD) alcoholic and energy-beverage portfolio from Sun Mark International Limited.

In a statement made to the Nigerian Exchange, Champion Breweries confirmed it will assume full ownership of all brand assets and intellectual property associated with Bullet.

The deal will be structured through a newly formed Netherlands-based entity, in which Champion Breweries will retain a majority stake, while Vinar N.V., a Belgian majority shareholder of Sun Mark. will retain a minority interest.

The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals, notably from the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).

This acquisition marks Champion’s strategic expansion into Nigeria’s fast-growing RTD and energy-drink space—sectors traditionally dominated by global giants like Red Bull and Monster.

Bullet products, particularly Bullet Black, lead in the market and are distributed across more than 14 African countries, including Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Tanzania.

Reflecting on this development, Chairman Imo-abasi Jacob stated, “This proposed acquisition will mark a transformative step for Champion Breweries, expanding our portfolio to include high-growth categories with strong consumer demand. Bullet’s international footprint and brand strength perfectly align with our vision for sustainable growth and market leadership.”

Meanwhile, David Butler, Managing Director of enJOYcorp, commented, “We see tremendous potential in Bullet as a truly global African brand.”

Butler added, “With its strong position in key markets and significant headroom for expansion, we will be poised to accelerate growth through new product launches, market entries, and strategic synergies across our operations; working with existing partners and strengthening the distribution reach of all products in our range.”

Champion Breweries emphasises that the acquisition will deliver both immediate and long-term financial benefits, ranging from increased foreign exchange earnings to operational efficiencies via expanded distribution networks, product innovation, and consolidated supply chains.

Champion Breweries already commands a venerable position in the Nigerian market, producing popular beverages such as Champion lager and Champ Malt, and providing packaging services to Nigerian Breweries Plc.

By integrating the Bullet range, the company is positioning itself for broader market leadership and robust diversification, moving beyond traditional beer and malt into dynamic, fast-expanding beverage categories.
