The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Nnamdi Azikiwe University Chapter, on Tuesday morning, held a peaceful walk within the university campus in Awka, to register their grievances, while calling on the Federal Government to intervene and address their concerns.

This exercise by ASUU Unizik, which disrupted the normal course of academic activities in the university, was attended by academic staff of various departments of the Institution and lasted for a few hours.

As hundreds of protesters marched peacefully across the university, the protesting university teaching staff members blamed brain drain on poor remuneration and pitiable working conditions, which make relocation to foreign countries attractive. They also blamed the decline in the quality of graduates on a poor learning environment and structural issues relating to higher education in Nigeria and therefore called on the Federal Government to swiftly address those issues.

With inscriptions on placards such as “end poverty level salaries,” “lecturers’ dignity matters,” “FG, honour Alh Yayale Ahmed AGREEMENT,” “Pay us our worth,” “FG allow lecturers breath,” “Fair pay for fair work”, and “Blame FG for another long strike,” among others, suggest a possible strike action by the union if urgent action is not taken to look into their concerns.
