EducationNewsNigeriaPoliticsNSCDC’s Prof. Audi says Nigeria Records 1,700 Pipeline Vandalism Points

The Controller General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps – NSCDC, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, has said that Nigeria has over one thousand, seven hundred and two spots for possible pipeline vandalization across the federation. This was disclosed by Professor Audi during his lecture presented at the maiden Strategic Security Lecture Series of the Institute for Peace, Security and Development Studies, at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, on Wednesday, October 8, 2025. Professor Audi, who spoke on the theme “Application of Artificial Intelligence in the Protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure: the Role of NSCDC,” revealed that the agency, under his watch, continued to play a critical role in securing Nigeria’s national assets.

During his incisive lecture, Professor Audi further revealed that vandalism is a crime that is properly syndicated and most times involving the community, security officers, and those who have an interest in the oil sector. With this in mind, he noted that the NSCDC has zero tolerance for any kind of collusion involving its officers. Accordingly, only recently, the agency dismissed not less than 104 officers for offences relating to vandalizing national assets and infrastructure, the CG said. Speaking on the role of NSCDC in protecting critical national assets and infrastructure, Professor Audi noted that “Whenever there is insurgency, the infrastructure of the state will suffer.” In this light, he therefore observed that “a nation without a clear plan to protect its critical national assets and infrastructure is doomed.”

A major challenge of the NSCDC, according to CG Professor Audi, is personnel, considering that the agency has only about 25 thousand officers trained to use arms. However, he observed that the use of AI and ICT has aided the agency in fighting crime and in protecting Nigeria’s critical national assets and infrastructure. Through the efforts of the NSCDC, the CG said that the agency has destroyed over 400 illegal refineries in the past year. While thanking the President of Nigeria, Alhaji Ahmed Bola Tinubu, for all the support, Professor Audi expressed confidence in the quality of personnel at NSCDC, describing them as Nigeria’s elite security agency, with over 40 PhD holders in the agency. He also paid a particular tribute to the collaboration involving all security agencies in Nigeria.
