The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, says it will deploy about 1.4 million members of the National Youth Service Corps for the 2027 general election.
Professor Amupitan made this known during a visit to the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-General Olakunle Nafiu, at the NYSC headquarters in Abuja. The engagement was to appreciate the longstanding support and sacrifices of corps members in Nigeria’s electoral process.
Professor Amupitan described corps members as a critical pillar of credible elections, noting that corps members remain the most trusted and neutral ad hoc staff deployed at polling units nationwide.
INEC Chairman, stressing that their discipline and patriotism continue to strengthen public confidence in elections, acknowledged the risks corps members often face during election duties and assured his host that INEC would continue working with security agencies to strengthen safety measures.
“INEC will require 707,384 corps members for the Presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for January 16, 2027, and the same number for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections on February 6, 2027, bringing the total to 1,414,768.
“Similarly, an additional 52,446 corps members would be deployed for off-cycle governorship elections in states including Ekiti, Osun, Nasarawa, Enugu, Rivers, Ondo, Kebbi, and Kano,” he said.
Responding, Brigadier-General Nafu reaffirmed the corps’ readiness to support INEC, noting that the existing Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions, first concluded in 2011 and periodically reviewed, remains active.
The NYSC Director-General pledged the Corps’s continued collaboration with INEC to ensure the successful conduct of both general and off-cycle elections.
“Corps members as credible, trainable, and reliable manpower, the outgoing batch of millennials would soon be replaced by Gen Z corps members with strong digital skills that could further improve election management,” he added.
