The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man for allegedly spreading false information on social media about a bandit invasion in Atan Ota area of the state.
The suspect, identified as Kowi Oloyede, was accused of creating and circulating a misleading TikTok post claiming that bandits had attacked the community.
Police sources said the case was reported on May 23 by one Ayinla Sodiq of Obasanjo Ota, who brought the suspect to the station.
According to the report, the complainant alleged that Oloyede fabricated the claim and shared it online, triggering concern among residents.
The Divisional Police Officer was said to have immediately interrogated the suspect following the complaint.
During questioning, the suspect reportedly admitted to creating the content to gain followers and attract attention on social media.
Police authorities added that photographs and video evidence linked to the false publication were recovered during preliminary investigation.
The command said the suspect would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) in Abeokuta for further investigation.
It warned residents against spreading unverified information that could cause panic or public disorder.
The police urged members of the public to verify claims before sharing them on social media platforms.
