Four people have been confirmed dead and at least 24 others seriously injured following a train accident along the Warri–Itakpe corridor near Agbor in Delta State, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has said.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Federal Ministry of Transportation, the NRC said the incident occurred on Monday, 8 June 2026, and involved multiple coaches on the Warri–Itakpe Train Service.
“The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) regrets to confirm that a serious train accident occurred yesterday along the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) corridor near Agbor, Delta State,” the statement read.
Preliminary findings indicate that four coaches capsized while one derailed, leading to fatalities that included “two adult females, one adult male, and one infant passenger.”
A total of 442 passengers had been booked on the train, alongside 40 crew members and service providers, bringing the number of people on board to 482.
Emergency response teams moved swiftly to the scene, with support from the Delta State Government and multiple agencies.
“Rescue and evacuation operations were immediately activated with the support of the Delta State Government, NEMA, FRSC, the Police, Civil Defence, local authorities, security agencies, and other emergency responders, and were completed by 6:30 p.m,” the statement said.
The injured were taken to medical facilities in Agbor, where they are receiving treatment. Authorities confirmed that 24 passengers sustained serious injuries, while several others suffered varying degrees of harm.
Among those on board were prominent figures, including Senator Ede Dafinone, who represents Delta Central Senatorial District, and a former Secretary to the Delta State Government, Patrick Ukah.
The NRC also disclosed that one of its staff members suffered a traumatic limb injury but is in stable condition and receiving care.
Expressing sympathy, the Ministry said: “The Ministry and the NRC extend their deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and pray for the quick recovery of all those injured.”
It also commended the efforts of first responders and members of the public who assisted in rescue operations.
Authorities have since retrieved the full passenger manifest, which will be made available upon request, while efforts continue to properly identify all victims.
A full investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
“A full investigation into the cause of the accident has commenced, while efforts will continue to account for all passengers and provide the necessary support to those affected,” the statement added.
