Three persons including Vice Principal Government Secondary School in Iluke, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Mr Gani Anifowose have been killed by gunmen that invaded the school on Wednesday morning.
The attackers was said to have invaded the community and attacked the school at about 9 am when students were writing the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). thereby disrupted the examination in an attempt to abduct students in the process.
Meanwhile, the Kogi State Government has expressed deep sorrow over the attack by suspected bandits disguised in military uniforms, described the incident as a tragic act of terrorism and extended condolences to the families of the victims, the people of Iluke Community and the entire Bunu District.
The Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo in a statement on Wednesday praised the military, local vigilantes, hunters and other security personnel for their sacrifice and patriotism.
It noted that their actions saved innocent lives and averted a potentially devastating mass kidnapping.
“The superior firepower, professionalism and courage of the security agents ensured that all the students were rescued unharmed and returned safely,” the statement said.
The government disclosed that one of the attackers was neutralised during the operation, while several others escaped with gunshot wounds.
Fanwo added that security agencies have since launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects and are intensifying efforts to bring all those involved in the attack to justice.
The state government assured residents that it is closely monitoring developments in the area and working with security agencies to strengthen security around the affected community, adding that additional measures would be announced to further protect lives and property.
