The Enugu State Government has commenced construction of two new 33KV lines and the extension of one existing short 33KV line from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) Station, Ugwuaji, to provide a stable electricity supply for communities in Nkanu East, Nkanu West, Awgu, and Aninri Local Government Areas in the state.
A press statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, on Media reveals that the intervention stems from the challenges experienced by the Amechi 33KV feeder, which is a major source of electricity supply to Nkanu East, Nkanu West, Enugu South, Awgu, and Aninri Local Government Areas in Enugu State.
At the stakeholder’s meeting, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Enugu State Electrification Agency (ESEA), Engr. Christopher Ezeoha explained that upon completion, the new feeders will supply electricity to Nkanu East and Nkanu West, while the Amechi feeder will be reconfigured to serve Awgu and Aninri LGAs.
Subsequently, four new injection substations will be constructed in Nkanu East and Nkanu West to transform electricity from 33KV to 11KV, thereby strengthening distribution and ensuring a steady power supply in the areas.
Ezeoha further disclosed that Enugu Electrification Agency Ltd. is mandated to distribute and market electricity in Nkanu East and Nkanu West; however, in the long term, this Agency will take over electricity distribution services across the State.
Meanwhile, the General Manager of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Enugu Region, Dr. Tom Inugonum, commending the Enugu State Government’s intervention, revealed that some transmission and substation projects in the region are yet to be completed, hence limiting the capacity of the power system.
Inugonum further called on residents to guard against vandalism of transmission infrastructure, as protection of substations, transmission lines, and other critical facilities is a collective responsibility.
Supporting community involvement in protecting electricity infrastructure, the President-General of Isi-Amagunze, Mr. Okey Nwatu, reiterates, “Transformers, cables, switches, and other electrical facilities are critical infrastructure that communities must protect if they want to enjoy a sustained electricity supply.”
