The Plateau State Flood Advisory has warned that no fewer than 777 communities and 443 schools in the State at risk of flooding between August 19 and 25, 2026.
The warning is contained in the State Flood Advisory, NFA-2026-231-PLA, issued on Wednesday, which identified 15 local government areas as vulnerable during the seven-day period.
It said five of the 11 gauging stations in the state were currently at risk, with Barkin Ladi, Bassa, Bokkos, Jos East, Kanam, Kanke and Langtang North among the affected LGAs.
According to the Advisory, 232 health facilities, 69 markets, 388 religious centers, and 36 other critical sites, among locations that could be affected, while several communities, including Mier, Bodi, Baure, Hyallang, Federe, and Gai, were among those facing the threat.
It further said that water levels at the Akunni gauge on the Akunni River had exceeded warning thresholds, increasing the risk to communities on the floodplain.
Residents in affected areas were advised to move with their livestock and valuables to identified higher, safer ground without delay.
The advisory urged communities to clear drainage channels and remove blockages that could restrict stormwater flow, while discouraging construction and habitation on floodplains.
The advisory also called on authorities and communities to prepare relief materials, water-treatment supplies and first-aid equipment, as well as safe shelters in case evacuation becomes necessary.
It urged community leaders to mobilise early-warning volunteers to monitor developments and alert residents to changes in the situation.
