Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, has awarded full scholarships to members of Team Rivers, who emerged champions at the Presidential Inter-Schools Debate Championship, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to investing in education and rewarding academic excellence.
The Governor announced the scholarship awards on Friday during the inauguration of the newly reconstructed Bonny National Grammar School in Bonny Local Government Area of the state, where he described education as the most critical investment in the future of Rivers State.
According to him, the government must go beyond funding education by sustaining programmes and initiatives that add value to the lives of the people. “Today is not just about the hardware development because we just celebrated a software – our children who participated in the Presidential Debate and performed excellently even in the most difficult conditions.
“They came out first in the championship. For this particular outstanding performance, we are giving those students scholarships,” Fubara said.
He directed the Ministry of Education to immediately commence arrangements for the implementation of the scholarship programme.
“The Commissioner for Education and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, take note and work out the modalities. For every one of them that participated, we must make sure that we take full responsibility for their education starting from this minute,” he declared.
He stressed that the scholarship was part of his administration’s broader commitment to developing Rivers State’s human capital, noting that educational advancement remained critical to equipping young people to take advantage of opportunities in the state’s growing economy.
He cited Bonny as a strategic location where education could help indigenes capitalize on opportunities created by the oil and gas industry. “Today, we have the Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas (NLNG) and other multinationals that are operating in Bonny. Some of our people are working with them because of education. We intend to improve the lot of Bonny through education, knowing the importance of Bonny in the hydrocarbon and energy development of Nigeria,” the Governor stated.
The Governor also described the reconstruction of Bonny National Grammar School as a major intervention in the education sector, saying the project demonstrated his administration’s preference for delivering tangible development rather than making promises.
He described the commissioning as historic, noting that it was the first time in more than 20 years that a state government was visiting Bonny to commission a project rather than campaign. “I need to say this, maybe I stand to be corrected but – this is the first time in over twenty years that the government is coming to Bonny to commission a project. We’ve been coming here to campaign. We’ve come here to make promises. But now we’ve gone a step further to ensure that we break that jinx,” the Governor stated.
Fubara, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi, said the visit was meant to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to the school and assure the people of Bonny that they remain an important and valued part of Rivers State.
“We have come here today to demonstrate the significance of this wonderful institution and to tell the good people of Bonny that the government still remembers you and that you’re part of Rivers State,” he said.
