The All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, has sweeps all the 21 local government chairmanship seats in Anambra State in the local government elections conducted on Saturday, August 29.
The Chairman of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC, Mrs Genevieve Osakwe, who declared the results on Sunday in Awka, said the election was free, fair and credible and was conducted peacefully in accordance with the state electoral laws and guidelines.
Mrs Osakwe stated that APGA won in 20 LGAs through a Yes or No voting pattern, having produced sole candidates.
“APGA fielded candidates for various positions across the 21 Local Government Areas, while the Young Progressives Party, YPP, fielded a chairmanship candidate only in Anambra East.
“In Anambra East, APGA polled 50,169 votes to defeat YPP, which scored 1,658 votes,” she said.
The ANSIEC chairman declared the APGA candidates won after they polled the majority of votes for all the positions.
She also reaffirmed the declaration of councillorship results already announced at the local government levels and appended the approval of the commission to the outcome of the elections.
The ANSIEC chairman commended voters, political parties, security agencies, civil society organisations, ANSIEC personnel and the media for their support in the conduct of the election.
Mrs Osakwe appealed to candidates who lost the election to accept the outcome in the spirit of democratic competition, and urged the winners to serve with a high sense of responsibility.
