… Donates 6000 Tree Seedlings To Schools
As part of efforts to preserve the environment and in commemoration of 2026 World Rivers Day, the Upper Benue River Basin Development Authority, Yola (UBRBDA) has donated 6000 tree seedlings to selected schools within the catchment areas of the authority.
The Managing Director of the authority, Doctor Mahmud Sanusi Mohammed, announced the donation on Monday in his speech on the occasion of World Rivers Day held at the Upper Benue Staff School, Yola, explained that the day is beyond planting of trees or the cleaning of a river but creating awareness, responsibility, and a culture of environmental stewardship.
“Forests and rivers are interconnected components of our natural environment. Forests help protect watersheds, reduce soil erosion, support the water cycle, and control the sustained flow and quality of rivers and streams. When forests are destroyed indiscriminately, the consequences are felt far beyond the forest itself. We experience increased erosion, loss of vegetation, degradation of riverbanks, sedimentation of river reservoirs, reduced water quality, and, in some cases, reduced water availability. This ultimately affects both human beings and animals,” he said.
Doctor Mohammed stressed the need for continuous environmental education and for the pupils to understand the importance of forests, rivers, and water to carry the message beyond the school environment into their homes and communities.
“The young people gathered here today are not merely spectators; you are the custodians of tomorrow’s environment, the future managers of our water resource and the generation that will inherit our rivers, forests and ecosystems. It is therefore important that you understand from an early age the relationship between forests and rivers. water and life.
“We should know that, when we pollute or destroy these ecosystems, we are not only damaging the environment; we are threatening the survival and well-being of the living organisms that depend upon them,” Sanusi added.
Sanusi reiterated the authority’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote sustainable water resources management, environmental conservation, and community participation, and assured that it would work with relevant government institutions, schools, communities, and other stakeholders to promote responsible management of water resources.
In their goodwill messages, the Federal Controller of the Ministry of Environment, Hajiya Safiya Mohammed Abubakar, urged the public to cultivate the habit of tree planting to safeguard the environment.
On her part, the Chief Executive Officer of Fombina Garden, Hajiya Mansura Buba Ardo, while calling on the public to preserve the environment by planting trees, donated 200 tree seedlings to the school.
Some students who spoke at the event, Fadimatu Sani and Yunusa Umar Yunusa, appreciated the management of the authority for celebrating the day in the school and pledged to carry a message to their communities.
