Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that President Bola Tinubu’s anticipated second term will be a unity government, citing the inclusion of opposition politicians in the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council.

Akpabio disclosed this during Wednesday’s plenary, describing the composition of the campaign council as an unprecedented political development since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.

He said the council’s broad-based membership demonstrated a commitment to political inclusion and national unity beyond party affiliations.

According to the Senate President, Tinubu’s second-term administration would build on the coalition reflected in the campaign council, which brings together political figures from different parties.

“This isn’t just an inclusive government in terms of infrastructure, revenue allocation and reforms. It’s also an inclusive government in terms of unity of purpose in democracy,” Akpabio said.

“What we’re going to witness is evidence that his second term is going to be a unity government, just like his campaign council is a unity campaign council made up of almost all the political parties in the country.”

Akpabio said Nigeria was setting an example for other African countries, congratulating Tinubu, APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, and leaders of the participating political parties.

He specifically hailed Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for joining the campaign council despite their different political affiliations.

Akpabio argued that competence and individual contributions should take precedence over party identity in the pursuit of national development.

“I can imagine how even a professor and former governor of the Central Bank, Prof. Soludo, will add his ideas to the next administration so that Nigeria will be better. This is the way Nigeria should be,” he said.

Earlier, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele had described the inauguration of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, scheduled for 2 p.m. on Wednesday, as a historic event.

Bamidele spoke while moving a motion for the Senate to adjourn its sitting until Thursday, highlighting the participation of opposition figures in the campaign structure.

He said Soludo, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and Adeleke, associated with the Accord Party, would serve as state coordinators for Anambra and Osun, respectively, while Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), would coordinate activities in the FCT.

Bamidele said lawmakers from different political parties would leave the chamber and proceed to the campaign council, expressing hope that the political engagement would promote issue-based campaigns and strengthen democratic practice.

“We’ll leave this chamber as members of different political parties and proceed to the Presidential Campaign Council. We look forward to a campaign that will celebrate ideas and strengthen our democracy,” he said.

Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, who represents Benue South Senatorial District on the PDP platform, seconded the adjournment motion but declined to comment on the remarks by Akpabio and Bamidele.
