Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, has said the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) adopted President Bola Tinubu as its preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election to sustain its political alliance with the Federal Government.
Soludo said the arrangement followed APGA’s tradition of supporting the party at the centre, citing its adoption of former President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party as its presidential candidate in 2011.
The governor spoke at an event on Sunday, where he explained that cooperation between APGA and the ruling All Progressives Congress had strengthened over the years.
He said Tinubu played a role in supporting APGA during a difficult period in Anambra State, helping the party maintain its political foothold.
“When we were contesting for election recently, there were some people who came to chase us away, but during that period, there was a person that believes that ‘progressives are working together’, and that person supported APGA to survive in Anambra,” he said.
“And that person is Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and he is the presidential candidate of APGA today. In 2011, APGA, under a leadership in Anambra, understood that we need an alliance with the centre, therefore, the party adopted then President Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP as its presidential candidate, so we got the support from the centre and that is the reason APGA is still existing till today.
“Overtime, that alliance between the centre and APGA has gotten stronger. For next year’s election, APGA following that same tradition, has now formally adopted Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as its presidential candidate.
“If you are a supporter of APGA, on January 16, 2027, when you get your ballot paper, cast your vote for Tinubu for presidential, then APGA for Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly.”
APGA’s decision means the party will not field a presidential candidate in 2027 but will contest legislative elections in Anambra State under its own platform.
The party had announced its support for Tinubu in May 2025, when the President visited Anambra to commission projects executed by the state government. Soludo said at the time that APGA’s policy of supporting the party controlling the Federal Government had not changed.
In March 2026, APGA’s National Chairman, Sly Ezeokenwa, reaffirmed the party’s position, saying it would remain aligned with the ruling party at the centre while pursuing its own political interests in Anambra.
Meanwhile, APGA has congratulated Soludo on his appointment as the Anambra State coordinator of Tinubu’s 2027 Presidential Campaign Council.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ejimofor Opara, described the appointment as recognition of the governor’s leadership and commitment to progressive ideals.
The party said Soludo had consistently advocated a strategic partnership between APGA and the Federal Government for the benefit of Anambra State and the wider South-East.
“The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Grand Alliance heartily congratulates our National Leader and Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, on his well-deserved appointment as the Anambra State Coordinator of the President Bola Tinubu 2027 Presidential Campaign Council,” the statement reads.
“This appointment is a testament to Governor Soludo’s exemplary leadership, his uncommon commitment to progressive ideals, and his consistent advocacy for a strategic partnership between APGA and the Federal Government for the collective good of Ndi Anambra and Ndigbo at large.”
Opara said APGA had formally adopted Tinubu as its consensus presidential candidate at its National Executive Committee meeting and during the President’s working visit to Anambra on May 8, 2025.
He added that the party’s decision was based on shared political ideals and the benefits of cooperation with the Federal Government.
According to him, “Soludo’s mantra that ‘Progressives are Working Together’ is not just a slogan, but a statement of historical truth. APGA, as the first truly progressive party in Nigeria, shares ideological DNA with the progressive movement at the centre.
“This synergy has already yielded tangible dividends for Anambra State, including federal collaboration on critical infrastructural interventions and economic development enablers.”
The party also reiterated its position on the division of electoral support in the state, saying: “In Anambra, it is Tinubu for President, APGA for Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly.”
Soludo’s appointment places him among the political figures expected to mobilise support for Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The revised campaign council list also includes Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola and Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo.
