Thousands of people have been displaced after flooding submerged 18 communities in Ekye Development Area of Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa state.
Nasarawa State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Nawani Aboki, confirmed this on Monday while briefing journalists on the impact of the flooding said two people died from the disaster and thousands were displaced.
“Two persons have lost their lives as a result of the flood in some of the communities, with many people displaced, several buildings destroyed as well as farmlands,” he said.
Aboki said the displaced residents are taking shelter in various locations, including Agyma, Rukubbi and Akpanaja.
The commissioner described the incident as massive flooding and warned residents against returning to their homes until the water had receded.
“But we’ve asked them not to go back yet. Let them wait till we see actual drying of the water. We are not sure if more water will be coming in from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, it will even be worse than it is currently,” he said.
Aboki said Governor Abdullahi Sule had directed the Director-General of the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA) to visit the affected communities to assess the damage and determine the necessary interventions.
