The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, has said that political opponents twisted his message to the Nigerian Diaspora Community over sending money to their relatives at home.
It will be recalled that Obi had during a town hall meeting in Manchester, United Kingdom, urged diaspora Nigerians to reconsider sending money to relatives asking for financial help and instead encourage them to vote for productive leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former Anambra State Governor was quoted as saying, “You have people at home in Nigeria today who are begging you for money. Tell them no! Let’s put somebody who has proven to be productive.”
Obi in a statement titled “My Message Has Been Twisted” shared on his social media handles, on Tuesday, noted that he deeply appreciates the hard work and sacrifices of Nigerians abroad whose remittances cover vital needs like school fees, medical bills, rent and food.”
According to him, his core point was critiquing a system where millions are forced to rely on overseas support just to survive, rather than asking people to abandon their loved ones.
The NDC presidential candidate, while insisting that his message was twisted by political opponents, noted that even though his media office had issued a responsible clarification on the situation, he found it necessary to add his voice to address the distortion of his message by political opponents.
His message on his X, formerly Twitter reads, “I deeply appreciate Nigerians in the diaspora who work tirelessly and make enormous sacrifices to support their families back home. Their remittances pay for school fees, hospital bills, rent, and feeding expenses. Their patriotism and sacrifices deserve our profound respect.
“I never asked them to abandon their loved ones. My concern is that Nigeria should not remain a country where millions depend on relatives abroad for basic survival.
“Our goal must be to build a nation that provides jobs, affordable healthcare, quality education, and economic opportunities for its citizens.
“Political opponents may twist my message, but the truth remains clear: I’m not asking Nigerians abroad to abandon their families. I’m advocating for a Nigeria that will no longer abandon its own people.” Obi added.
