One person has been killed and three others injured in an attack on the convoy of Rollins Offia-Nwali, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Ezza South Constituency in the Ebonyi State House of Assembly.

The attack took place at about 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, 22 October, in Amaezekwe community, Ezza South Local Government Area, the police said.

The Ebonyi State Police Command spokesperson, Joshua Ukandu, said operatives were deployed to the community after receiving a distress call about a disturbance.

“Upon arrival, the operatives found four individuals with gunshot wounds and a burnt vehicle,” he said. “One of the victims was confirmed dead at the hospital, while the three others are receiving medical treatment.”

Offia-Nwali said suspected political thugs attacked his motorcade and set his Toyota Hilux vehicle ablaze. He added that he and members of his entourage escaped unhurt.

The candidate expressed sympathy with those affected by the incident and urged youths in the state not to allow politicians to use them to pursue personal ambitions.

“No political ambition is worth the life of any young person,” he said.

However, reports by other media outlets on Friday presented conflicting accounts of the incident, including claims that the shooting involved an exchange of gunfire between the attackers and security personnel attached to the candidate.

Some reports also said two suspected attackers died in the incident, although the police account confirmed one death and three injured persons.

The additional casualty claims and the circumstances surrounding the shooting could not be independently verified by Pilot News.
