NewsNigeriaPoliticsNDC to Unveil Campaign Council, Publish Financial Records Monday

…80% of candidates received free forms

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) will on Monday unveil its National Campaign Council for the 2027 general elections and present its statement of account as the party steps up preparations for the polls.

The two activities will take place during the party’s third National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m. on October 26 at JD Event Centre, Kashim Ibrahim Way, opposite A-Class Park, Maitama, Abuja.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, announced the plans in a statement dated October 23, describing the proposed financial disclosure as a demonstration of the party’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

According to the statement, the National Treasurer, John Odey, will present the party’s statement of account at the meeting.

The NDC also challenged other political parties, particularly the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), to adopt similar measures in managing their finances.

“For the NDC, it is no longer politics as usual,” the party declared.

The proposed disclosure comes as the party seeks to establish its identity ahead of the 2027 elections, with its leadership positioning financial transparency as a key part of its political agenda.

The NDC attributed its financial constraints to the economic hardship facing Nigerians, claiming that about 80 per cent of its candidates could not afford its Expression of Interest forms.

The party said it provided the forms free of charge to the affected candidates, blaming the situation on poverty, hunger and deprivation under the APC-led administration.

“Our finances would have been more robust. However, contrary to speculations in the public domain, and due to the level of poverty, hunger and deprivation in the country occasioned by the rudderless APC and its amorphous economic policies, about 80% of our candidates could not afford the Expression of Interest forms. The party had to issue forms to such candidates free of charge,” Director said.

The party did not identify the candidates who benefited from the arrangement, according to a report by Premium Times.

The party said the National Campaign Council would coordinate campaigns for its presidential, National Assembly, governorship and state Houses of Assembly candidates.

It also announced plans to present Certificates of Return to its candidates for their respective offices.

The unveiling was initially scheduled for October 20 but was postponed because of the tight schedule of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and an important engagement abroad, according to reports.

The rescheduled inauguration is expected to provide an opportunity for the party to consolidate its campaign structures ahead of the elections.

The NDC was registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in February 2026 following a Federal High Court order, bringing the number of registered political parties in the country to 21 at the time.

As preparations for the 2027 elections gather pace, the party says it is determined to offer Nigerians what it describes as altruistic leadership.

“The NDC is turbo-charged and ready to give Nigerians the altruistic leadership the nation deserves. A New Nigeria is Possible. We can do it!” the statement added.
