Crime & SecurityNewsNigeriaBenue Killings: Senate Orders IGP to Probe Deaths of 113

…Demands Urgent Security Action

The Senate has directed the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to urgently investigate the killing of 113 people, including six Mobile Police officers, in four separate attacks on communities in Benue State.

The lawmakers also called on the Chief of Army Staff and heads of other security and intelligence agencies to intensify operations in the affected areas to prevent further attacks and protect vulnerable communities.

The resolutions followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Senator Emmanuel Memga Udende (APC, Benue North-East) during Thursday’s plenary.

Presenting the motion, Udende raised concerns over recurring attacks in Ukum, Katsina-Ala and Logo Local Government Areas, which he said had claimed lives, destroyed property, displaced residents and disrupted farming and other economic activities.

He identified four separate incidents, including the killing of 24 people in Sai community, Katsina-Ala LGA; 63 in Bom and Aboajio villages, Ukum LGA; and 15 people, including six Mobile Police officers, in Ayilamo, Logo LGA.

The senator also reported that 11 people were killed in Tse Biliji and Tse Shishi Nyako villages in Ukum LGA on October 8, 2026.

The four attacks brought the reported death toll to 113, prompting calls for immediate intervention to halt the violence

The Senate condemned the killings and observed a minute of silence in honour of the victims. It also expressed condolences to their families and the Nigeria Police Force over the deaths of the six officers.

The lawmakers urged security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering, sustain operations in the affected communities and identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible for the attacks.

They also called for effective early-warning systems and rapid-response mechanisms to enable security operatives to detect threats and intervene before more lives are lost.

The Senate further urged the Federal Government to take immediate steps to protect residents of Ukum, Katsina-Ala, Logo and other vulnerable communities across Benue State.

In a related development, the lawmakers called for additional security deployments and improved coordination among security agencies to address the persistent attacks.

The Senate also urged the National Emergency Management Agency to work with the Benue State Emergency Management Agency and other relevant authorities to provide relief materials and assistance to residents affected by the violence.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed concern over the killing of security personnel, questioning the safety of residents who lack the means to defend themselves against armed attackers.

“If military personnel and other armed security officers are killed in these attacks, what happens to communities that have no means of defending themselves? We must bring this matter to the attention of the Service Chiefs so that they can take appropriate action to strengthen security in the affected areas,” he said.

Akpabio stressed the need for the service chiefs to take urgent measures to strengthen security and prevent further bloodshed.
