Mr Tunde Olatunji, the Chief Whip of Osun House of Assembly, on Friday distributed 1,000 hand sanitisers to his constituents in Ife-North in a bid to stop the spread of coronavirus.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that gloves and nose masks were also distributed by the lawmaker at major markets, motor parks, palaces as well as police stations in the constituency.
Olatunji, who sensitised the people to outbreak of the virus, said the free hand sanitisers, gloves and nose masks, were to show love to the people “at this period the virus is spreading”.
According to the lawmaker, the virus is a challenge to humanity and does not respect status, religion, tribe or political affiliation.
Olatunji urged people to stay safe by following health precautions given by governments and health professionals to stop the spread of the virus.
The lawmaker, who decried the upsurge in the prices of the hand sanitisers in the country, urged the beneficiaries to make use of them wisely.
“One of the hallmarks of a responsible leader is to look after the needs of the people, which necessitated the free distribution of these sanitisers.
“People are really in need of these sanitisers, nose masks and gloves but because of upsurge in the price, they cannot afford them.
“I am happy to contribute my little quota to stop the spread of the virus,” Olatunji said.
Residents of Edu-Abon, Ipetumodu and Akinlalu towns, where the items were distributed, commended the lawmaker for the gesture, describing it as a life -saving step.
Alhaji Abdulmajeed Adedeji, the Chief Imam of Edun-Abon, said that the hand sanitisers would help to minimise the spread of the virus.
Adedeji said the price of sanitisers had gone beyond the reach of the masses.
SP Adeniran Emmanuel, the Divisional Police Officer of Edun-Abon Divisional Police Headquarters, said the sanitisers given to his officers would assist in minimising the spread of the virus.
Oba Mufutau Oyekanmi, the Alasipa of Asipa, and Oba Oyinlade Oyekanmi, the Alakinlalu of Akinlalu, whose palaces were visited, also thanked the legislator for the gesture.
A trader, Mrs Oladayo Modupe, said the free hand sanitiser was a dream come true, adding that she had been willing to buy but could not do so because of the high cost.
Also, Mr Rufus Awotiloye, Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC), Ife-North, said that the lawmaker’s kind gesture should be emulated by all.
