CoronavirusLifestyleNigeriaLiving through the Pandemic—Another Hectic Day

It’s another Friday Morning in the bustling city of Lagos, but this particular Friday is the 6th day since the Lagos State Government enforced a directive on social gatherings. This follows after a growing number of positively tested cases within the state.

On the streets, people are seen walking about their normal activities with some others waiting outside of their porches. Following a directive from the State Government that all markets and stores be closed, there has been a surge in the price of essential commodities. Some of these price changes can be seen in face masks, hand sanitizers, food, groceries among others.

Speaking with the correspondence Ngozi Diana, a woman in her middle 50s explains that people were yet to adjust to health sanctions and measures that have been directed by the state government. “People are still doing as if there is no virus, I even ate in a mama put (Food Vendors place) yesterday”, she mused. “Even these Abokis (Hausa Men) you would see them after running about, sweating, moving around they will use  the same hands to sell and exchange money. It is God that will save us”, she said while sighing.

Another middle aged man who would later refer to himself as ‘Orobo’ narrated his Experience with getting sanitizers, Vitamin C, and Face Masks. Somehow these three items had become essential since health practitioners had advised towards their significance in the cause of lessening the pandemic.

“Before a  packet of hand gloves used to sell for 150 Naira, now they sell for 300 Naira. Vitamin C is now a hotcake!! Everybody is just looking for Vitamin C and sellers have almost sold out. People are just trying to take advantage of this Virus issue”, Orobo explained disappointed.

The effect of the ban cannot be measured as it is less than a week since the government enforced  the directives on organisations and institutions in the state.  Alright the directives are yet to be enforced throughout the state, the coming weeks will tell a lot on future of the bustling City.
