CoronavirusNigeriaOpinionWhy Nigerians are Unsympathetic to Buhari and Kyari

Many Nigerians are actually very passive, they don’t care at all until whatever the issue maybe gets to their doorstep, so many wishful thinkers and misfortune gloaters, leaving their main responsibility completely unattended to. Since the news of Abba Kyari — President Buhari’s Chief of Staff, who tested positive for coronavirus leaked, most Nigerians have been literally jubilating over that as if it is a straight jackpot and a guarantee to a better Nigeria, but in sincerity, we know it is not.

Beyond that, many Nigerians publicly made comments wishing he never return back to Aso-Rock. Even Zara Buhari, the President’s daughter claimed in her tweet that the earth is cleaning itself, most likely referring to Kyari’s infection. Then also the news of President Buhari testing negative for coronavirus, apparently was not well received at all.

Many have wondered how it is possible that the President could possibly test negative when Kyari has tested positive. In fact, there are so many unconfirmed reports suggesting that President Buhari has fallen ill and needed intensive medical care. Only today, more unconfirmed reports have it that both Buhari and Kyari have been moved to an unknown place outside Nigeria for treatment. Still, Nigerians have continued to wish these men never return to Aso-Rock.

In many instances, some Nigerians are jubilating that most of the people so far infected with the deadly virus are some of the members of the ruling class. Now for me, I do not know if it is the fault of every single privileged Nigerian that the country is the way it is and so, I cannot say for sure if they all deserve what many of their country men and women are wishing them.

Of course, Nigeria is almost completely ruined by the recklessness and clear lunacy of its ruling class that is very sadly too difficult to fathom, much less explain. Most of Nigeria’s problems are manmade and are not necessarily very complex or requiring extraordinary skill or effort to solve. Yet, Nigeria has been on a spiral free fall, abysmal depreciation in quality of everything to its current stage of near total system collapse. But rather surprisingly, Nigerians are not outraged.

It is somewhat bizarre and, indeed, it will be incorrect to therefore say that Nigerians do not sympathize with Buhari and Kyari because they have inflicted Nigerians with near panic uncertainty and hardship.

They are not taking their country back from leadership epidemic that has consumed the country at all levels. They are angry no doubt, but not angry enough. It is somewhat bizarre and, indeed, it will be incorrect to therefore say that Nigerians do not sympathize with Buhari and Kyari because they have inflicted Nigerians with near panic uncertainty and hardship. Otherwise, what else have Nigerians been doing to change their own leadership fortune, in Buhari and the famed Aso-Rock cabal, presumably chaired by Kyari? This clearly portray Nigerians as a people incapable of taking the right step to address their problem but instead, gloat at perceived enemy’s misfortune.

Certainly, that Nigerians are strongly unsympathetic to Buhari and his government truly questions the legitimacy of the Buhari’s government. If he actually won the 2019 Presidential election, how did he loose popular support so soon? Well, what did Nigerians do about the election outcome last year, to challenge his election? Nothing!

The fact is, people don’t usually know what a government official should be doing. And so, by default therefore, every public officer is an enemy of the people, yet they are the ones who elected these officers and many of them sold their votes, which enabled the not so good candidate to win.

Here is the problem. Many Nigerians somehow think that privileged Nigerians, all of them, owe them something. Nigerians generally think people who are privileged should just do something for them. Anybody in power in Nigeria is seen as a thief. The fact is, people don’t usually know what a government official should be doing. And so, by default therefore, every public officer is an enemy of the people, yet they are the ones who elected these officers and many of them sold their votes, which enabled the not so good candidate to win. So, the typical Nigerian lives a complex life of self-denial, playing the victim card and blaming anything else but himself. Quick to gloat at others’ adversity at all cost, but never looking at the man in the mirror.

Assuming Buhari and Kyari were just wealthy or privileged Nigerians, neither politicians nor public officers, many Nigerians will still be happy, making jokes and laughing at their foibles and adversity. Such is typical of public reaction to fortunate people’s trouble in Nigeria. People seem generally to appear insensitive, unfeeling, and totally unsympathetic to other people’s predicament.

For these Nigerians, whatever misfortune that comes their way, serves them right. Till date, many Nigerians think that since people can build house close to a pipeline track at Abulo-Ado, well they believe, maybe it serves them well, not minding the quantum of destruction. Some are wondering why soldiers are sent to fight Boko Haram in Borno state as a reaction to the death of over 40 Nigerian soldiers killed by Boko Haram.

My point is this, if Buhari is not the choice of Nigerians, is wishing him and his relative Kyari dead the solution to the problems of Nigeria? The honest answer is no, and it’s not even an option.

If Nigerians are serious about reclaiming their country from malfeasant leaders, government sycophants and apologists, there are ways citizens can hold their elected officials responsible in their bid to ensuring good governance. Nigerian must pay attention to real issues, hold their government accountable and not simply resign to fate and lay in wait for misfortune to do their job for them.
