72 Nigerians in China have been tested positive for the coronavirus disease. These are Nigerians in Guangdong Province of China who are waiting for evacuation.

According to reports, 56 Nigerians tested, and the results released on Tuesday. The results showed that the persons were asymptomatic. It created some worry that they might have infected others.

It was reported that 16 Nigerians had earlier tested positive for COVID-19, which brought the total number of infected persons to 72.

Tracing 65 contacts

According to the Chinese authorities, 65 persons who had contact with the infected persons were being traced.

The statement disclosed on April 22, 2020, by the Foreign Affairs of Guangzhou Municipal People’s Government in a diplomatic correspondence to the Nigerian Consulate in Guangzhou.

The correspondence read in part, “According to the data by the Guangzhou Municipal Health Commission on April 21, and there are currently 16 confirmed cases and 56 positive test cases among Nigerian citizens in Guangzhou, as well as 65 cases of contact.”

It read further that “We invite the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Guangzhou to supervise Nigerian citizens in Guangzhou so they can abide by the law of the People’s Republic of China on the prevention and control of infectious diseases.”

A Nigerian daily The Punch reported that the correspondence was written in Mandarin and translated into English using Google Translate.

Over 2000 Nigerians in the diaspora have indicated an interest in returning to Nigeria on account of the coronavirus pandemic.

Following the viral video that showed Nigerians being evicted from their hotels and apartments in China, the Nigerian authority had announced a plan to evacuate Nigerians in China first as a result of the stigmatization and racism.
