The Resident doctors of ESUT Teaching Hospital Parklane Enugu took to the streets of Enugu Metropolis yesterday in a peaceful demonstration of the inhuman treatment and denial of their rights.
The doctors who assembled within the hospital premises under heavy surveillance of security officers prayed before taking to the streets with their placards.
Recall that the doctors under the auspices of the Association of Resident Doctors ESUT-TH Parklane resumed her indefinite withdrawal of services effective from 8 am, April 24th, 2020.
The ARD ESUT-TH Parklane has been engaged in a protracted struggle for the improvement of working conditions vis-à-vis upgrade from a fraction of the Consolidated Medical Salary Scale, CONMESS, of 2009 currently being paid to her members since 2014 to the CONMESS of 2019, as is obtainable in Federal Tertiary Health Institutions, FTHI, and many State Tertiary Health Institution, STHIs.
The resumption of the withdrawal of services by the ARD was spurred by the State Government’s inaction to fulfill her agreement to pay them by the current CONMESS structure by April salary.
The Association also decries the gross disparity in the entry points for medical doctors between ESUT-TH Parklane and other FTHIs.
In a letter signed by Dr. Chima Emmanuel Edoga, President ARD, and Dr. Chukwunonso N. Ofonere, General Secretary, “ Members of ARD ESUT-TH, Parklane is shocked and dismayed that the Enugu State Government eventually reneged on the written approval following payment of April 2020 salary”
The ARD further stated that suspension of their service withdrawal action will only come after another EGM following full implementation of the approval with Ref. No GHS/57/S.2/111/270 given to ARD ESUT-TH Parklane by the Enugu State Government.
Since yesterday, there is a heavy presence of security officers within and around the hospital premises.
