The Presidency on Wednesday said everyone should be prepared to accept autopsies reports to ascertain the causes of deaths in Kano as a result of the alleged strange illnesses that saw many including prominent individuals dead.

This is contained in a statement released by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

The President’s spokesperson said what would determine the cause of the deaths would be scientifically and medically conducted autopsy.

He said, “In Nigeria, there are currently verbal autopsies underway in Kano State to identify the precise cause of the sudden and rapid increase in mortality in recent days.

“While some may wish to believe that there are other causes at play here like hypertension, diabetes, meningitis, and acute malaria’, there are others who say it is COVID-19.

“We should be prepared to accept the medical and scientific result of the autopsies and work together to confront the common enemy.”

In space of two weeks, over 160 persons have died in Kano as a result of the disease that is yet to be identified.

On Monday, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje directed the state Ministry of Health to adopt “verbal autopsy” for the ministry to determine the cause of the mass deaths since the deceased had been buried.

The West African Pilot News learned that latest prominent person that died in the state was Hajiya Hamma Akilu, mother of the former Director of Defence, Brigadier General Haliru Akilu (retd).

Aminu Akilu, a son to the retired General, confirmed the death to journalists on Wednesday via a telephone interview. Aminu confirmed that the late Hajiya Hamma died at the age of 100.

It is reported that the aged constituted the highest number that deceased persons among the people that have died from the strange death in Kano.

The West African Pilot News had earlier reported that amid mounting speculation, Kano says deaths of prominent individuals are not due to COVID-19.
