Oyo natives residing in Igangan, Ibarapa LGA have identified that a total sum of N50m has been paid to herdsmen as ransom with 15 women raped.

The secretary of Igangan Development Advocates, Lawal Akeem alongside the natives made the allegation at a town-hall meeting with representatives of the state government on Sunday.

The community leaders presented pictures and other evidence of ransom paid to herdsmen.

The conflict started in the community on Friday after Sunday Adeyemo, a youth leader better known as Sunday Igboho, stormed the area with his supporters, following the seven-day eviction notice he issued to herdsmen.

Some buildings and cars were set ablaze, including those belonging to Saliu Abdulkadir, Seriki Fulani of Igangan.

In response, Seyi Makinde, the Governor of Oyo State ordered the police to arrest anyone found stoking ethnic tension while Mohammed Adamu, inspector-general of police (IGP), ordered that Igboho be arrested for inciting violence.

However, the CP has given that assurance that every victim will get justice and all the allegations they have made as to the Seriki colluding with criminals will be looked into.

She urged the youth to resist taking laws into their own hands, adding that the police will investigate the allegations.

“We have come to assess and listen to you over the incident. I want to appeal to every one of us to be calm and ensure there is peace. If there is no peace in the community, there won’t be growth and development.

“I want to appeal to the youth. We have listened and they have interpreted all your complaints and I want to say you should not spoil your case by using force. We are a new team. Bring out all the cases you have, put them in an orderly manner and we will make sure that justice is done.

“It does not matter where you come from – whether you are from Igbo, Yoruba or Hausa. Actually, we have the good and bad ones. Criminality is not only ascribed to a particular ethnic group, it cuts across all the ethnic groups,” she said.
