Security operatives in Yola, the Adamawa state capital have intercepted two trailers loaded with hundreds of Fulani herders, their animals, and personal effects fleeing from Zamfara state due to incessant attacks on communities by bandits.
The herders who were billed to settle in the Fufore local government area of Adamawa state a few kilometers away from the state capital considered to be safe haven were kept at the Wuro Hausa Police Division in Yola South local government for some hours before being allowed to proceed with their trip.
Most of the occupants of the trailers were women, children, and youths.
One woman who spoke in Hausa said “daga Zamfara muka fito, suna kashe mazajenmu da kidnaping, suna sace dabbobinmu, wurin babu dadin zama”.
She said, “they (bandits) killed our husbands, kidnapped others, rustled our cattle, the place is not conducive for habitation”.
DSP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) said authorities are aware of their movement and there is no cause for alarm.
“Authorities are aware of their movement, but it is mandatory to screen them, and a committee was set up to do that, we need to know their destination and to have constant contact with them so as to halt committing any criminals acts, and any law-abiding citizen will be protected.
“They have the right to go anywhere but had to undergo screening, and traditional leaders will talk to them on the existing laws of the land”, he said.
