ENUGU — A bill for a law to provide for the grant of pension to Governor and Deputy Governor on leaving office and to repeal the Enugu state gubernatorial pensions law 2007 and for connected purposes on Thursday scaled first reading at the State House of Assembly.

The Executive bill seeks to provide pension for life for person(s) elected into the office of the Governor or Deputy Governor in Enugu state.

“A person who has held office as elected Governor or Deputy Governor in Enugu State or any other State with its capital at Enugu shall be entitled to pension for life at rate equivalent to the annual basic salary of the incumbent Governor or Deputy Governor respectively; provided that such a person was not removed from office by the process of impeachment.”

Section 5 of the bill further proposed that such persons shall also be entitled to be paid such other gratuity or allowances as may be provided by any other law.

Other entitlements of a former Governor and Deputy Governor as sought by the bill is a medical allowance not exceeding twelve million naira and six million naira per annum respectively for one surviving spouse, provided that such a spouse was married to the governor/ Deputy Governor while in office.

“Where a former Governor or former Deputy Governor dies, the state government shall make adequate arrangement and bear the financial responsibility for his burial;

“And pay a condolence allowance of a sum equivalent to the annual basic salary of the incumbent to his next of kin.”

The above and many other entitlements were included in the proposed bill which will be debated on by the members of the House before it scales second reading, then public hearing.

In his remark, the Deputy Speaker of the House, Uche Ugwu, who presided over the plenary asked his colleagues to properly study the bill in order to make robust contribution during the second reading of the bill.
