ENUGU — The Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Deputy Governor, Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo, and the State Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Priscilla Ngozi Emehelu, on Monday, were vaccinated with Oxford AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine at the Government House, Enugu.

The trios were the first stakeholders to be vaccinated in the state apart from some frontline health workers at ESUT Teaching Hospital Isolation and Treatment Centre, Enugu vaccinated on Friday.

Speaking to newsmen, the Executive Secretary, Enugu State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Ugwu, revealed that the vaccination exercise in Enugu State in this first phase starts with frontline health workers as witnessed on Friday, key stakeholders of political, religious and traditional institutions as well as elderly people with underlying illnesses.

Ugwu further explained that the decision to start with frontline health workers is in line with the protocol laid down by National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) to give priority to health personnel working in the isolation and treatment centres.

The Executive secretary also confirmed that the state government received 65,410 doses of Oxford AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines and had trained health personnel that will administer the vaccines; Ugwu revealed that over 102 members of the team will handle the exercise in this first phase.

Dr. Okechukwu Ogbodo, a frontline health worker at ESUT Teaching Hospital Isolation and Treatment Centre and the first person to be vaccinated in the state encourages residents of the state to take the vaccine.

“The experience of being the first person to receive this vaccine in Enugu State is overwhelming. I can tell you that almost 30 minutes after taking the vaccine I am hale and hearty; no reaction. So I want to encourage everybody in Enugu State to come and take this vaccine,” Ogbodo said.
