Another two weeks of space have been given to farmers and herders in Ekiti state to register under the state government.

All farmers and herders in the state have been instructed or risk getting expelled from the state according to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Olabode Adetoyi.

The state had conducted a two-week registration of farmers and herders in February but not citizens under the stated categories seized the opportunity. The two weeks window provided by the state government begins on Monday, 22nd of March.

According to the commissioner, the exercise was expedient to ensure that all farmers and herders could be accounted for and is in line with the National Livestock Transformation Programme of the Federal Government.

He also indicated that the clashes between farmers and herders threaten human and food security, and as such, proactive measures to curb the menace must be adopted.

The farmer-herders crisis which was aggravated by the rising environmental degradation in some parts of the country escalated into a bloody clash within the past few years.

Between 2010 – 2015, no less than 6,500 Nigerians have been killed with 62,000 others forced out of their homes.

According to the International Crisis Group (ICG), the escalating conflict between the warring parties was six times deadlier than Boko Haram attacks in 2018.
