ABUJA — For speedy recovery and rapid development of the North-Eastern part of the country devastated by terrorists, the Belgium government has promised the Federal Government of its support of Five Million Euros for humanitarian assistance.

Belgium Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Daniel Bertrand disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the North East Development Commission liaison office in Abuja.

“Belgium Government had over the years maintained bilateral relationship with Nigeria, and the donation would revive the socio-economic strength of the people North East and Nigeria in general,” he said.

Bertrand applauded the management of the North East Development Commission for transparency and commitment towards ensuring total rehabilitation of Victims of Boko haram insurgency.

Responding, Muhammed Alkali, the Chairman of the North East Development Commission, said the Commission had been receiving consistent humanitarian support from the Belgium government and solicited more support in the area of Agriculture, Sports, and Capacity Building for people of the Region.

“The whole of the North East, as you can probably research it, a large percentage of people depend on Agriculture, because of insurgency, many have moved to the city but now they are going back, we need support in that area and capacity Building, Sports and resettlement of the people of the Region.

“The mandate of the North East Development Commission which includes providing humanitarian assistance and resettlement of people displaced by terrorists have been yielding positive results since the establishment of the Commission,” Alkali said.
