ABUJA — Ms. Comfort Lamptey, United Nations Women Country Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS has called on government institutions to key into the National Action plan of the United Nations Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security to ensure increased participation of women in security, peace and conflict resolutions.

She was speaking in Abuja at a High-level Stakeholders Meeting on the Implementation of the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda in Nigeria.

“Nigeria’s implementation of UN Resolution 1325 was a good one in the West African region, however, more needed to be done in terms of funding and ensuring that other state institutions like the judiciary take ownership of the plan to ensure effective representation of women in peace and security processes.

“The security sector is key, the justice sector is key, ministry of education is very much a partner in this process as well as the national human rights commission. Women’s rights organizations need to be supported to continue to both advocate and implementation efforts to make the women peace and security agenda real and ensure that plans are well implemented,” Lamptey said.

In her message, the Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olufunso Adebiyi stressed the importance of engaging women in the various stages of peace and security processes for maximum impact and resolutions.

“Engage women in peace and security engage them in the consultation, engage them in peacemaking processes. If women are recruited into security agencies, empowered and equipped they may do the magic we all have been waiting for” she said

In her remark, UN Women, Mr. Peter Mancha further explained that so far 14 states had domesticated the National Action plan on women, peace, and security which had recorded success in women participation in conflict resolutions and mediation processes.

The UK High Commissioner to Nigeria Ms. Catriona Laing, programme specialist women peace and security, advocated the inclusion of cyber security in the development of the third national action plan of women peace and security to educate women on how to address insecurity in cyberspace.

Similar, recommendations and commitment had been made by other Ambassadors and Representatives of Intergovernmental organizations and development partners to the development of the third national action plan on women, peace, and security agenda in Nigeria.
