LAGOS — Okike Chinyere, a female inmate of the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCS, Lagos State Command, has emerged as the best graduating student of the Department of Peace and Conflict Resolution, National Open University (NOUN).
According to a statement by the correctional service, she bagged a second-class upper (2.1) degree in the course.
Chinyere was among the eight inmates who received their Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) certificates in various degrees from the institution.
Speaking during the presentation of the B.Sc certificates to the eight graduands, the Lagos state Controller of Correctional Service, Adewale Francis Adebisi, urged the inmates to imbibe the virtues of education.
According to him, incarceration should not stop them from dreaming, encouraging them to use the “opportunity available while in detention to better their lives so that when they are released, they can contribute positively to the society.”
Apart from the eight inmates who received B.Sc certificates, a male inmate, Alegbe Afolabi, was also awarded a Masters of Science, M.Sc, in Peace and Conflict Resolution.
