YOLA — About 4,000 lives were lost daily due to Tuberculosis infection with 28,000 people falling sick to the disease globally.

Adamawa State Programme Manager, Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control, Doctor Boniface Gundiri disclosed this at a one-day sensitization programme to educate the public about the ailment to commemorate this year World TB Day.

The programme which took place Thursday at the premises of the Out-Patient Department, OPD, of the Specialist Hospital Yola, was organized by the Adamawa State Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme and drew participants from different strata of life.

According to Doctor Gundiri, TB remains one of the World’s deadliest infectious killer diseases, but global efforts to fight TB have so far saved an estimated 63million lives since 2000.

“Adamawa state has in 2021 diagnosed and placed on treatment 4,000 Drug Sensitive TB and resistance TB patients.

 “The rate of TB infection in Nigeria is partly due to poor Knowledge that the disease influences the health seeking behavior of the people, low treatment and diagnosis,” he said.

Gundiri stated that Adamawa has four hundred and five Dots Facilities, sixty six AFB Microscopy Centre, nine gene expert site and one DRTB treatment centre as well as one Zonal Reference Laboratory.

In his message, Adamawa State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Isa Abdullahi expressed the state government commitment to providing a counterpart fund for the sustenance of the programme.

Abdullahi stated that Governor Fintiri led administration has built seven new Cottage Hospitals across the state to boost health care services.

Represented by the Director, Public Health Department in the Ministry, Dr. Celin La’ori, the Commissioner appreciated the efforts of partners for contributing towards the success of the programme.
