ENUGU — The ambiance once enjoyed by the coal city residents and visitors have become a thing of the past as gory sights of garbage in all nooks and cranny of Enugu state raise questions on the existence or extinct of the waste management agency established in 2004 under Chimaroke Nnamani administration.

The once spick and span environs of the city now compete with Onitsha in Anambra State and Aba in Abia state;

Onitsha in months most likely will exit the leagues of dirty towns in the South East given the huge evacuation of dirt in the commercial town by the Soludo administration.

The pathetic state of garbage spilled all over the coal city led helpless residents to resort to garbage burning which pollutes the air, water, and soil and is dangerous to human health.

As dangerous as this step is, the rainy season is here again and will not only douse the fire but decompose the dirt, emit foul smell in the environment and cause the possible breakout of diseases.

“It is obvious that there are serious lapses in the evacuation of garbage in the state. I have lived in Enugu city since 2003 and have never seen the disgusting sights of garbage all over the place,”

“Half of the road is taken over by household dirt and the trucks that come to pick them are always overladen with dirt therefore unable to pack the garbage and end up spilling the same on their way to their final destination.”

“We call on the state government to declare a state of emergency on garbage evacuation in the city and work out a plan to sustain it,” a male civil servant who pleads for anonymity states.

Many also ask what happened to the refuse evacuation trucks purchased under Sullivan Chime’s administration.

The trucks were more efficient in evacuation as it is built to mechanically load, compact, and transport the garbage as against what is obtainable now; men with shovels loading the garbage on tippers.

The decadence and its negative effect on us is purely a case of lack of maintenance culture, especially on government properties.

Whatever be the case, something has to be done and quite urgently hence residents call on Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to look into waste management in the state and do the needful so as to return the glory of the coal city.
