ABUJA — The Managing Director, North East Development Commission (NEDC) Mr. Muhammed Alkali says Crisis and Climate Change have affected 30 million people in the Lake Chad Region.

He made this known at the opening of the first Annual forum on the development of the Lake Chad Region held in Abuja, saying regional collaboration on the recovery and development of the Lake Chad Region keyed into by the Federal Government will improve economic and Socio-political wellbeing of the people.

“Nigeria’s inclusion in the ongoing World Bank-financed Multi-Sectoral Crises Recovery Project, being implemented in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe States, has a similar focus to the Regional Project in terms of Social cohesion, livelihoods, restoration of services and infrastructure in the area.

 “The collaboration through regional coordination, knowledge, monitoring and rural mobility and programmes targeting at improving agriculture livelihood of the people would address insecurity and forced displacement crisis in the country and other three countries of Cameroon, Republic of Niger and Chad,” Mr. Alkali said.

In a remark, the Executive Secretary of the Lake Chad Basin Commission, Ambassador Mamma Nuhu expressed the hope that the maiden edition of the forum would facilitate effective mechanism for regional cooperation and Coordination of Stabilization and recovery intervention across Lake Chad Region.

The meeting which was declared open by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had critical stakeholders in attendance from the four Countries affected by Lake Chad including the Federal Minister of Water Resources, Mr Suleiman Adamu.
