The head of the lawmaker representing Aguata Constituency 2, at the Anambra State House of Assembly, which is also Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s constituency, Hon Okechukwu Okoye, who was kidnapped last week was found on Saturday 21st May, 2022, at Nnobi in Idemili South local government area of Anambra State.
His body was not there and indications were that the killers removed the body.
Okoye and his aide Cyril Chiegboka were on a journey when they were kidnapped.
Police later recovered the car and said that they had deployed operatives to rescue the lawmaker and begun manhunt to track the kidnappers.
While presenting the state’s revised budget to the state lawmakers on Friday, Governor Soludo informed them that their colleague who was representing him in the House of Assembly was still in the kidnapper’s den.
” I regret that one of you, the member representing the good people of Aguata II Constituency in the House of Assembly (my own representative) – Hon. Okechukwu Okoye is still in the custody of the kidnappers.
“The security agencies are working very hard and round the clock to secure his freedom. God is on the throne and Anambra will win. Let me leave it at that”, the governor said at the House of Assembly.
In a release signed by his press secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime, Governor Chukwuma Soludo condemned the gruesome murder of Honourable Okechukwu Okoye and his aide, Cyril Chiegboka who were kidnapped on the road on 15th, May, 2022.
According to the release, Governor Soludo condoled with his kinsmen of Isuofia, noting that it is probably the same criminal gang that attacked him and killed three policemen at Isuofia two years ago that are once again on the prowl.
While expressing shock and the resolve of his government in confronting insecurity in the state, the release quotes the Governor as offering a reward of ten (10) million naira for anyone or group that will give valuable information that will lead to the immediate arrest of the perpetrators of the dastardly act.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police Anambra State Command, Mr. Echeng Echeng, described the murder of Hon. Okechukwu Okoye as barbaric and an act of cowardice.
The CP had in a press release signed by the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, recalled that the Command Operatives earlier embarked on a rescue operation following the incident of his abduction on same date at about 5:30pm along Aguluzigbo Umuona, Aguata LGA.
The Police Commissioner said while the rescue operation was still ongoing, a headless body was seen and later recovered by Police along Nnobi, Ideani road which was later confirmed as Hon Okechuwu Okoye. The corpse has been deposited in morgue
The Commissioner of Police, while commiserating with the family and friends assured that the perpetrators of this dastardly act shall be brought to book.
