LAGOS — Days after it was announced that he had clinched the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) House of Representatives ticket for Eti-Osa federal constituency, Lagos, doubts have trailed Banky W’s candidacy.
Olubankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, had contested for PDP’s Eti-Osa constituency House of Representatives ticket for the 2023 general elections against a legal practitioner, Mr. Sam Aiboni.
The singer turned politician won by polling 28 out of 31 votes cast by delegates at the primaries, while the opposition polled only three votes.
However, a new report of the final result submitted at the PDP headquarters in Abuja that has gone viral on social media suggests that the singer may have lost his ticket to his rival after he was declared winner.
The new twist has left Nigerians wondering how the singer lost an election he had initially won.
Taking to Twitter, most of them expressed shock and dissatisfaction over the development. Our correspondent picked some of the comments.
Activist and convener of Concerned Nigerians, Deji Adeyanju tweeted, “PDP is cursed. Banky W didn’t get the ticket according to their latest evil scheme, all they care about is dollars…Kai, I’m sincerely tired of this country. We are in serious mess. The generation of our children are in trouble.”
In reaction to Adeyanju’s tweet, Nollywood actor, Yul Edochie wrote, “My brother, politics in Nigeria is all about money. 90% of the political parties are set up to make money. They don’t care about state of the country. That’s why APC sold form for 100m. When I ran for governor in 2017 my party people nearly fought me cos I wasn’t sharing money.”
Former presidential aspirant, Oby Ezekwesili tweeted, “Just when you think we’ve seen all the shenanigans these folks can do. What happened to BankyW’s win of the Primary? I detest those two-peas-in-a-pod Parties but the young man worked hard for his win. Too sad.”
Dr Chinonso Egemba, also known as aproko doctor, queried, “I thought Banky W won the ticket. Didn’t we all watch a video of votes being counted?”
A tweep, @SodiqTade tweeted, “In Lagos PDP, you can be the candidate and not still be the candidate. Your candidacy depends on the approval of some people. People were celebrating Banky W for winning HoR Primary the other day but today he is no longer the candidate. Lagos PDP looks like a banter. Yes, it is.”
Another, @TheoAbuAgada tweeted, “Dear @OfficialPDPNig, what you did to Banky W is not fair. Absolute bullshit.”
