NewsLawyer Dumps Native Doctor’s Attire, Says ‘The Spirit’ Led Him

LAGOS –– A Lagos-based lawyer and human rights activist, Chief Malcolm Omirhobo who sparked controversy last Thursday by appearing at the Supreme Court dressed as a traditionalist, has reverted to his normal legal garb.

On Monday, he had appeared at the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos before Justice Tijjani Ringim who refused to hear his two cases because he was not properly dressed as a lawyer before the court.

The judge, thereafter, adjourned his case till October 10, when the lawyer is expected to address the court on why he can appear in his traditional attire.

48 hours after, Omirhobo appeared at the Federal High Court, Lagos again. This time, in his normal barrister’s dress code—full wig, gown, bip, black trousers, and shoes.

Speaking to journalists who inquired about his mode of dressing, he said it was the way the spirit directed him to appear, adding that he would revert to his religious garb again if so directed.

“I am led by the spirit, the spirit said we should do normal today. Don’t be surprised if you see me the other way tomorrow,” he said.

As to whether ‘the spirit’ was in conformity with the ethics of the legal profession and dress code, Omirhobo replied: “What ethics are you talking about? Are you insulting my religion? Don’t try it. Don’t insult my religion.

“The constitution, according to the Supreme Court, says I should dress according to my religious attire and you are insulting the Supreme Court. Behave yourself.”

It is not yet certain if the Delta State-born lawyer, who categorically stated last Thursday that the religious attire would be his mode of dressing henceforth in accordance with the ruling of the Supreme Court in favour of female Muslim students wearing the hijab in public primary and secondary schools, reverted to the conventional lawyers’ dressing because he was denied hearing on Monday.
