In an effort to prevent Boko Haram escapees from Nigeria from entering the country, the Ghanaian Immigration authorities have issued a security alert to all regional and sector commanders over the recent jailbreak in Nigeria.

This is according to a bulletin signed by the Deputy Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Laud Ofori Affrifah on behalf of the Comptroller-General, Kwame Asuah Takyi.

Recall that there was a jailbreak at the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja, said to be masterminded by Boko Haram terrorists late Tuesday, July 5, 2022.

The group is said to have freed all 64 inmates who have links with the extremist group. In all, however, 443 out of 879 inmates broke jail, official report says.

According to the Comptroller-General of the GIS, these Boko Haram escapees from Kuje prison are “likely” to migrate to Ghana “considering current migration trends of Nigerians within the sub-region”.

He, therefore, urged immigration officers at the borders to be vigilant in order to prevent some of these escapees who are on the run from entering the country.

“Nigeria recorded another jail break at the Kuje Maximum Security Prison in Abuja on Wednesday night, 6th July, 2022,” the press release read.

It continued, “It is believed that the Jihadist group Boko Haram are behind the attack which saw the use of high end explosives and guns, that freed all 64 Boko Haram linked inmates at the prison and are among the escapees who are still on the run.”

“Considering current migration trends of Nigerians within the sub-region, it is likely most of the escapees will attempt to enter Ghana through both approved and unapproved routes.

“In view of the above, I am directed to inform you to institute stringent measures at all Points of Entry and intensify patrols to deter and intercept all escapees who will attempt to infiltrate the country.”

Attached to the statement are images of the 64 Boko Haram-linked escapees, released by the Nigerian Correctional Service last Friday, July 8.
