AWKA — It was a moment of sorrow and grief at the Anambra State legislative complex in Awka, as the State House of Assembly today, bade their assassinated colleague, Hon. Okey Okoye, popularly called “Okey di okay” farewell in a well-attended valedictory session. Hon. Okey was kidnapped about two months ago, and eventually murdered after ransom was paid for his release, decapitated, and his lifeless body dumped by the roadside.
The honourable members took turns to eulogize the memory of their deceased colleague, with all the members describing the late Hon. Okey Okoye was an honest and honourable gentleman, who had uncommon courage and never was afraid to say his mind, not minding how it may be perceived. He was not one given to political correctness, as it is usually the custom in politics, his colleagues affirmed variously.
Among those in attendance was the Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezi. Dr. Ibezi who conveyed the governor’s condolences and also his own condolences, particularly observed that there is a disturbing trend of violence around the world. He however assured us that the government is ready to push back and sack all criminals from Anambra State. The Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu spoke passionately and while extending his condolences, appealed to the consciences of leaders to work hard and do more for the well-being of the people.
Other government officials at the plenary were; Dr. Alex Obiogbolu, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, among many others. Hon. Okey Okoye will be buried on Friday, 22nd July in his home in Isuofia, Governor Soludo’s hometown.
He is a Technical Assistant to Governor Willie Obiano’s Special Adviser on Legislative Matters, whoonce was a Special Adviser to a former Deputy Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly.
