ENUGU — Enugu State has been recognized as the second highest performing state in Primary Healthcare Service Delivery in Nigeria for the years 2019-2021.

Presenting the plaque award of recognition to the Executive Secretary, Enugu State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ENSPHCDA), Dr. George Ugwu, on behalf of the state, Stanley Achonu, Country Director of One Campaign in Nigeria, commended the present administration for her excellent status of the primary healthcare system, especially in the rural areas of the state.

“We commend Gov. Ugwuanyi for making Primary Healthcare delivery a priority of his administration in the overall interest of residents of the state, especially those residing in the rural areas.”—ONE Campaign.

The organization equally applauded Dr. Ugwu, Executive Secretary ENSPHCDA, for the great impact of the agency in safeguarding the health of the residents of the state as seen in the fight against Yellow Fever, Cholera, COVID-19 pandemic, and all childhood-related diseases, which earned Enugu State the award.

The ONE Country Director further revealed institutions involved in the assessment and ranking; ONE Campaign, National Advocates for Health, Nigeria Health Watch, Public Private Development Centre, World Bank, and other partners, worked together in the ranking of the 36 states in Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Receiving the plaque, Dr. Ugwu, Executive Secretary of ENSPHCDA, attributed the success to the Enugu State Governor’s huge investment in Primary Healthcare and rural development.

Dr. Ugwu reveals, “The unique and outstanding Type-3 Primary Health Centres which are now functional in many parts of the state and the improvement of primary healthcare programmes and services with the implementation of the basic healthcare services as well as provision of funds have been remarkably innovative and impactful in Enugu State.”

Speaking to newsmen, Dr. Ugwu disclosed that Enugu State ranked second after the Federal Capital Territory FCT, Abuja in Primary Healthcare Service Delivery in Nigeria; invariably Enugu state ranked best among all the 36 states in the country.
